A six-story apartment building to be constructed in Kalamaria, a residential suburb of Thessaloniki.
The new apartment building hosts a 2-room apartment on each of the first 4 floors and a maisonette on the two upper floors. There is a private office on the ground floor and storage rooms for all the apartments in the basement. Morphologically, the new building introduces a new sustainable skin of aluminum mesh that surrounds all balconies, used not only as a guardrail but also as a shading panel at the same time. These mesh panels are also used to highlight the characteristic shape of the building’s pitched roof.
The bioclimatic edge of this metallic skin is being an actual vertical "green wall", as the plants bedded behind infiltrate the perforated material and climb all over it. The extended greenery along with the wooden covering of the balconies’ ceilings contribute to more salutary microclimatic conditions for the residences.
This green building is designed to be classified in the A+ energy efficiency category, creating a shell with structural elements of low thermal permeability coefficients, in accordance with sustainability requirements. Also, alternative sources of renewable energy will be used, such as photovoltaic units and solar panels.
