The idea of the complex is based on the decision of:
(A) a geometric organization of the site, treating it as a whole, in order to create a distinct "base" that produces a series of consecutive spaces closed and open
(B) the abutment of the upper part, a distinct oblong rectangular mass which houses mainly offices. This mass is protected by a "garment" of grates of a slightly polygonal form which transforms it into a sculptural object.
This idea leads to a series of individual outdoor but enclosed spaces, the planting of which will improve the microclimate and create to the visitor a sense of “collegium”. At the same time the particular shape of the offices’ mass promotes the distinction of the various building’s uses both functionally and semantically. The shading "garment" of the main building mass is placed at a distance of approximately 1 to 2 meters from the curtain wall and covers partially level 2 and fully levels 3 and 4 and part of the roof. Since the sun protection to the axes of NW-SE and NE-SW requires either a combination of horizontal and vertical blinds at any scale or horizontal blinds, preferably with a slight slope, there are two alternatives for the “garment”:
a. or a combination of two different types (shape and loop dimension) of galvanized grids. The exact location of each type of grid will result from a detailed simulation of the motion of the sun and the obscuration effect.
b. or a combination of densely perforated steel or aluminium sheet and horizontal tilted louvers mounted from the height of 2.00 m. to the height of 2.80 m. at each level of the building.
In both cases, the shading system is organized on a steel structure combined with balconies for the cleaning of the windows. Finally, the system can be implemented with full or partial use of the grated surfaces leaving blank areas at the height of preferable views or with any another combination. The two alternative systems, combined with the use of solar heat control film Scotchtint 3M on the windows facing SW and SE and with the planting of internal courtyards, can provide full sun protection in the main building mass of the complex as well as clear and unobstructed views.
