Project 2010-2011
The 7-floor building, designed in 1970 by Yannis Liapis and Elias Skroubelos, though innovative in its structural design, appears to be quite vulnerable as regards anticipated earthquakes in the Thessaloniki area. On the other side, the building, due to its continuous use as the central building of the School of Rural and Surveying Engineering, has to fulfil the requirements of present regulations as regards energy performance and protection of its inhabitants in case of fire. Due to the need to keep the building functioning, the project prescribes an external steel “clothing” with strong columns, beams, and diagonal conjunctions, covered by a bioclimatic steel grid to protect the façade from the sun. A new staircase is to be included between the new and the old façade. The new volume keeps the analogies of the old one due to the addition of a new floor.
