Research programme: 2008-2009
The central idea of the research project, methodologically based upon B. Hillier’s space syntax ideas (UCL), was the spatial interpretation of the city as a system consisting of attractors (“elkystes”), i.e. poles of interest, and extensive neutral zones. After the analysis of the characteristics of the area and the construction of the “axial maps”, the team selected 7 pilot areas of the municipality of a different character, and, in the frame of a student workshop, they designed proposals of urban and architectural interventions. During the third stage of the programme, the final proposals were formulated taking account of the conclusions of the spatial analysis and proposals for strategic interventions in traffic networks. The research programme was completed with the a programme of proposed future architectural and urban interventions, aiming at the regeneration of the area of the Municipality of Thessaloniki as well as of the wider metropolitan area, including street networks, parking areas, aesthetic improvement on the facades, the creation of a broader cultural area including most of the existing museums and the international fair of Thessaloniki, a programme of pedestrian ways in the city centre and others.
